Devon Advanced Motorcyclists (DAM) is an independent road safety charity affiliated to the Institute of Advanced Motorcyclists (IAM) and is an Official Road Smart Provider. We have been established for over 35 years and have helped hundreds of riders gain their Advanced Certificate. We are also an active motorcycling club for enthusiasts with the main aim being to promote safer and better riding. Among the benefits of passing your Advanced Motorcycling Test, apart from being a safer rider, are a sense of achievement and knowledge gained, usually cheaper insurance, discounts from various local bike shops, tyre services and some recovery companies and the satisfaction and enjoyment which comes from being a more skilful rider. The club has an active social calendar with a club night each month, where all sorts of motorcycling topics are discussed, often with a good deal of banter. Organised rides are held regularly and holiday tours are arranged both in this country and abroad. There are monthly training meetings to keep abreast of the latest developments together with training to maintain standards and members are able to participate in refresher rides with an Observer to assist with this.

Club Rides use the Drop-off System which has been devised so that all participants may ride at their own pace, with no fear of ‘not being able to keep up’.

The membership comprises Full members who hold the advanced test certificate and Associate members who are training for the qualification. Associates train with an allocated Observer, who holds a national qualification in motorcycle training, on a one to one basis. Once the standard has been achieved, the associate takes the test with an IAM examiner and success brings full member status. The time required to reach the standard depends on availability and progress, the key being that training is tailored individually to suit the needs of the individual. Training sessions usually last about 3 hours, being a morning, afternoon or evening and commonly, 5 to 7 rides are required, although the number of sessions is determined by need.

DAM welcomes all new members irrespective of the type of bike they ride and provides a fellowship of like minded people who like to ride their bikes in company and discuss all sorts of topics relating to motorcycling and the wider world. The first year’s DAM subscription is included in the IAM Advanced Rider course with annual subscription thereafter currently at £24.00. Included within the £149.00 cost is the first year’s membership of IAM, training materials to complete the course and the test fee.

DAM’s observers are all unpaid volunteers and so we request a donation of £70.00 to offset the cost of fuel for training runs. This covers a total of 6 training runs and a check ride. Should an associate require more than 6 sessions, a £10.00 contribution is requested for each additional session.
